Hyperpigmentation is caused by an overproduction of melanin – the pigment that gives our skin, hair and eyes its natural colour – in patches of the skin. This overproduction is triggered by a variety of factors, but the main ones can be linked back to sun exposure, genetic factors, age, hormonal influences, and skin injuries or inflammation.
Chemical peels and laser treatments can aid in the lightening of hyperpigmentation. Laser removes pigmented lesions with the energy of very short-pulsed light. Pigmentation is reduced or removed when the laser light is absorbed by the excessive amount of melanin under the skin.
Pigmentation can vary from superficial darkening to deeper pigmentation in the layers of the skin. Treatment program varies, with a combination of treatments.
Treatment of uneven skin pigmentation will be dependent on a host of factors including the type of pigmentation, cause of the pigmentation, and the layer of skin in which the pigmentation occurs.
To get you started on your Anti-pigmentation program, our doctors will assess your skin condition first before advising on the number of sessions needed.
The Anti-pigmentation program is available at all branches of The Chelsea Clinic.
